The binary here at https://nim-lang.org/download/nim-1.0.0.tar.xz is only about 4MB, however after I unzipped it, it became a whopping 770.7 MB directory, and the c_code directory in it contains 733.6 MB of files. Can I delete this directory after I compiled the binaries?

Yep, I just checked out the official docker image, it is also very large after being pulled. It seems this image is much smaller (201 MB). I wonder which version it is using.

Doesn't nim requires openssl and pcre as dependency? It seems you didn't install them in the dockerfile, or are they already included in the nim source itself?

Removed c_code from the Docker images, which got them almost three times thinner, from 1.3 GB to 527 MB. Thanks, @charlieH!

These 19 MB probably don't include GCC and git and curl and other packages necessary to build Nim.

yeah, but I would be surprised if a GNU/Linux distribution did not have gcc, git, curl and find (that script is for a GNU/Linux system).

If you want a light weight alternative to Curl for Docker images that is on repos of most distros, I use axel, few kilobytes for Axel Vs megabytes for Curl.

For anyone who want to get in with Nim quickly - use Manjaro LXDE. I've created myself Bootable USB and when run in Live Nim works out of the box. Mount your home partition (with your Nim folder)and you have your environment ready

Btw, Nim v1.0 has already hit Manjaro Testing branch (only half a day after the release!), and it will be part of the next Stable update.

(Bleeding edge Arch still has Nim v0.18, lol)

I think Alpine Linux comes with wget by default, and you can do wget -O - url to achieve the same effect as curl.

The Debian (and therefore Ubuntu) package recommends gcc and build-essentials and uses only 31MB. There is also a nim-doc package that contains documentation. You can use it to build a Docker image with everything you need.
