  You may notice some changes on the forum from today, the new release is here and it brings some pretty brilliant new features and some much needed bug fixes.

  The biggest change is the introduction of categories, the work put into this has been done by the brilliant @jyapayne. He put in a lot of work here and has been very patient waiting for his work to become live, thank you for your amazing work and patience!

  This forum hasn't been updated for pretty much 2 years now, so it was definitely very overdue. After a lot of back and forth I finally got the time (and will) to look into a performance regression that was introduced, fix it, and get the new version deployed. I hope that this version will be the most stable iteration of the forum yet. I would encourage you to get involved in the forum's development on GitHub (https://github.com/nim-lang/nimforum) so that we can make this forum even better.

  As always, happy to hear your thoughts as I'm sure @jyapayne is as well.

  Auto login doesn't work in Pale Moon browser - it didn't before either. The login box doesn't seem to be recognized as such, it might be a non standard format lacking expected identifiers I guess.

  @dom96 Awesome! Glad to see the updates I made finally shine through!

  As dom said, I'm open to thoughts and feedback! But I don't have much time these days to fix issues or work on the forum.

  For categories, my personal feedback would be to have a vote on which categories make it onto the forum. @dom96 is a bit minimalistic when it comes to having them, but I think it would be useful to have quite a few to mitigate the limited search functionality.

  As for other issues, I see them on the issue tracker, but I was always discouraged about fixing them due to the nim forum never being deployed. Even though I don't have time these days, it might be a good exercise for someone to take on trying to fix some of the bugs on the issue tracker. I can at least spare some time for code reviews :)

  Personally the categories I like ex: announcement, but I also like to read the whole, because there are very interesting things that are raised, interesting ideas, and sometimes we do not know where to put ... in which category. I think this is called technology watch ;)

  Relevant to what the category labels should be is that I think a forum thread can be in >1 category. Correct me if I am wrong. I did not study the code. Multiplicity of categories really takes pressure off of getting both the set of category labels exactly right as well as binning anything into a particular category. For example, discussion threads can easily evolve from a question into syntax debates/proposals for new syntax, and finally become about stdlib or some new sugar module candidate.

  That sounds more like tags than categories. If the number of categories is too high then tags is a better way to go.

  Wikipedia calls it "Categories" at the bottom of their English pages. I agree "tags" or "labels" is more common in usage by "computer programmers", but they are all overlapping/the same idea. It seems the original feature request also maybe conflated "tags" with "user definability" a la Twitter hashtags. Multiplicity is more important to ease of use than who defines tags, imo (though I have nothing against empowering end users).

  @cblake You are incorrect about multiple categories. Right now, the forum only supports one category per post. I wanted it to be "tags", but it just didn't end up working out that way based on code reviews and dom's feedback. Perhaps it can be in the future though :)

  Well, I wasn't really sure. :-) There's that old "square peg-round hole" saying in English cultures which basically comes up in only-1-category classifications. 1 category just makes everything harder..both "What are the right categories?" and "How do I categorize something?" It matters less who creates the labels and who attaches them, though crowd sourcing is often effective.

  This looks great. Good job!

  If I may request something: would it be possible to add a "dark theme" to the forum? The blinding light background is not the best when reading the forum at night :-)
