if I understood right, sympy is in the process of rewriting their core as https://github.com/symengine/symengine (a C++ library)

perhaps this could be easily wrapped for nim?

Depending on what you need, there are several libraries in C and C++ that should be wrap-able. For instance, CoCoA, Singular, LinBox, Pari, ... . Each of these is very likely to be the best at some aspect of what it does, because they are all developed by leading researchers in the field.
