Wouldnt drone-coding be a more fitting term for what is now called vibe-coding?
I dont get nice vibes if nobody codes for themselves any more..it sounds more like an AI propaganda word to me...
Actually vibe-coding is not really coding as i understand the definitions but more like (re)directing the AI and testing the results of the AI's work...
There's a new kind of coding I call "vibe coding", where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists. ... I "Accept All" always, I don't read the diffs anymore. When I get error messages I just copy paste them in with no comment, usually that fixes it. ...
As you see it's not pejorative at all and mostly pro-AI. Since then it's slightly shifted in usage, but not that much.
vibe coding is powerful , I was writing this "auth service" using clean architecture , and it pretty much wrote the whole thing with Test ( my mind was half blown lol ) , now I could have written it manually by scrapping docs gluing stuff but it could have easily taken two days for me. But I do feel a bit of identity shift , like you don't feel like a genius anymore by just gluing some functions and calling it magic.
will it replace developers ? I don't think so. some needs to understand what is being written by AI . but the main thing was architecture all along , higher level reality creates low level. AI is also pretty good in explaining architecture and adhering to it.
will it replace developers ?
A bit depending on what a developer is, did a 5-axis cnc replace designers? It will replace certain groups of the total work force as any system automation has done.
I conject an AI can learn anything. It depends on us what we feed it and allow it to do, and what robot-bodies it may get into..
Apart from the wisdom on how to treat the AI question, we can still do pre-AI activities. We can still enjoy a game of chess alltho we know the AI can win from us. We can still program alltho the AI will surpass (or has surpassed) us in the coding-capabilities...It's it bit hard for our ego tho to become less needed..(not to mention the question it raises in what kind of society we want to live in..)
I don't understand the pessimism. We're approaching a time where you can almost build anything you imagined but never did, whether because of lack of time, skills, or energy.
Instead of focusing on writing every line of code, you can focus on what differentiates your work from existing solutions. Yes, you still need to spend time cleaning things up, and domain knowledge helps a lot, but once you lock in a plan AI can implement most of it.
You can iterate multiple versions and pick the best one while doing something else, I've literally been doing from scratch revisions while playing PICO-8 games on my handheld.
AI also writes pretty good docs, although it usually needs some nagging. Sometimes it's worth spending time writing "ground rules" (skill files, prompts, etc.). And of course it works much better if you feed it existing code or prior work.
But once that setup is done, it's surprisingly competent.
The AI will define how powerful human being(homo sapiens) are/were,
We should never lose our skills like coding or any other, but we should also distance ourselves away from the fields that are likely to be overtaken by AI and should not depend on this field for earning or career.
We are building a mirror to see our limits and the monopoly of Human being high-level intelligence and cognition is being slowly overtaken by Machines and AI.
As Stephen Hawking said AI might be the last major invention of Humans, although he said it as ethical concern( AI redesign itself at an ever-increasing rate vs Humans evolving) but I believe it regarding competency We are excessively making ourselves dependent on AI for every works, slowly we will loss many of competency and are becoming lazy day by day.
AI is also making Dunning-Kruger effect more prevalent and illusion of competence is already everywhere thanks to AI.
I am very worried about the competence and future of our Next generation and think about if Smartphone and Social media have destroyed so many futures of Childrens then how much will AI given its availability at free of cost our future generation thinking and domain expertise capabilities will be much less if we continue to depend on AI for everything.
