I am about to start on Nim. Is there any preferred way to install it on Win 10? I can:

recompile

download 64bit (finish.exe) installer

use chosenim

use chocolatey

There is no consensus but IMHO "download 64bit (finish.exe) installer" is what you should do. And once you're more familiar with the setup, bootstrap from Nim's github repo -- this way you'll have a very good understanding how it all really works. Understanding is priceless.

Choosenim is very straight forward and allows for switching between versions well

Then I downloaded the dll's from the section "Other dependencies" and copied all dlls into yourhomedir/nim-1.4.6_x64/bin directory.

That's not required at all.

Thanks - I had problem with "download 64bit (finish.exe) installer" way. At least with 1.4.6 version. The The anti-virus program (McAfee) flags several binaries in that zip file as infected and blocks the installation. Tried chocolatey and it fails to install Nim 1.4.6 because the required Mingw fails to install - there is an issue with SHA256 mismatch. Same thing happens if you try to install mingw 10.2.0 separately. The 1.4.4 zip file dows not trigger anti-virus issues. I also tried first option - downloaded source from git hub and recompiled (I believe it ised Visual Studio C++ compiler). That option took a while but process finished - so with setting environment that might be an option. I tried installing choosenim from chocolatey - it installs but when you try to run 'choosenim stable' it again trips the McAfee installer - similar way as with zip installation: C:Userstom_n.choosenimtoolchainsnim-1.4.6binnimble.exe is flagged to contained virus. However 'choosenim 1.4.4' worked. I guess 1.4.4 it is - for now.

Do I lose a lot this stage (about to start on "Nim in Action" book) by using 1.4.4?

Thanks - good resources. I am coming from Python/Perl/Java direction. I also have interest in FP - Scala, Clojure and some minimal Haskell. In college I did C++ and recently tried to learn Rust - very interesting challenge.
