  Hello everyone,

  I have some good news. We have successfully obtained a stand at FOSDEM 2018 (taking place on 3 & 4 February 2018 in Brussels).

  You can see a list of all the stands here: https://fosdem.org/2018/stands/

  Now comes the time to invite you all to this brilliant (and free!) event. But more urgently we need to decide and organise the items at our stand. We have some ideas already of some essentials including multiple copies of Nim in Action and Nim t-shirts and other goodies, but we want to hear your ideas as well.

  How about some embedded toy project which coded in Nim?

  It would enticing if we can give some "limited" interpreter which directly working on actuator.

  I remember some member here was tinkering with Nim and beagle robot (or Arduino?), he even provided the video of end product of his toy robot.

  I'd love to, but neither me nor Araq have much embedded project experience. @federico3 might step up to the plate though, and of course if somebody else has a ready-made project I'd love to show it off, just let me know.

  Good news!

  Does everybody in the core team plan to join the event? Any plans to use the event to discuss further steps for the next year?

  Some other ideas for the booth:

  • Set up a playable game that was written in Nim, such as https://impbox.itch.io/vektor2089. (This is what first got me interested in Nim.)
  • Create “Try Nim!” tutorials at a laptop with the goal of getting people to tinker with and fall in love with the language by building a simple app. (It's probably safe to assume that users will have a little prior programming experience given the event.)
  • Create “Why Nim?” flyers / banners that summarise the benefits from https://nim-lang.org/features.html.
  • Offer clear next steps for people who are interested enough to learn more. (Direct them to https://nim-lang.org/, the forum, the book, other users.)
  • Sign interested people up to a Nim mailing list in exchange for free stuff (books, stickers, etc.).

  I think the goal should be to get people who may not have encountered the language to be intrigued enough to understand the problems it solves, to try it, to get excited about the things others are making with Nim, and to go away wanting to use it in their own projects.

  I have a question for all of you: I would really love to get some well designed T-shirts/flyers/banners. Does anyone know of someone who is good at these things? (I'm willing to pay of course)

  The only thing i can think off is led name tags (badge). If you let them come from China then they are not so expensive. http://www.toscos.in/led-name-badge.html

  And perhaps usb sticks with Nim installer on it. Baseball caps with Nim on it.

  And maybe something more useful (i don't know how to name these), where i live, i have to put 50 cent/1 euro/2 euro coin into the lock from the shopping basket. What you can do is make a Nim coin that will fit into this lock. With this you can also introduce the Nim currency on earth. :)

  There will definitely be some Nim people there. I might join (still not 100% sure if I will though), in any case I'll see you at the stand hopefully :)
