Hmm - what segment of the Nim community would this be for?
I haven't used it, but isn't Discord mainly for gamers (basically, text message or voice)? So that's also assuming that people are online at the exact same time, while playing a given multiplayer game.
What kind of advantage would this provide over how the Nim community currently uses IRC?

It's not that it offers an advantage for those already using IRC. It just makes it more convenient for people who aren't using IRC. Personally, I have a lot of music production groups I follow on Discord as well as a couple programming groups(like VueJS for instance). On IRC I follow several Django Channels and the Nim channel. It's extremely inconvenient to be constantly switching between IRC and discord. Luckily, Discord can be set up to work with IRC. This means that people on the discord can communicate with people in the IRC channel and vice-versa.
On top of this, Discord is generally more convenient and user friendly. It can embed videos and images, has code syntax highlighting, simple private messaging, and so on.
So, it doesn't fracture the community in any way, and doesn't hurt the IRC channel in any way.
